Meg

First, I'm a mathematical idiot. So, assuming that the theory and equation(s) used on the show are plausible, I loved it!

i must admit that January is pretty depressing.

jeff

the premiere of numbers was the only thing that stopped me from killing myself at this (mathematically proven) depressing juncture!!!!

Humm....
How about this for her theory about jan 24.

My jan 24th 2005.
Living on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia.
Weather overnight low of 20 deg cel then top of 29 deg cel, clear blue sky.
First month for the year accounts all paid on time, whoo hoo.
Australia Day 26/01/05 is mid week so let's take the public holiday TODAY being Monday!
It's such a nice day let's take the family on the boat and head to the islands for a BBQ lunch!

Depressing????

Are people really buying into that gabage? When I first heard it I thought nothing more of it then a bored mathematican playing a game. I can't believe that there is a paid professor actually putting energy into predicting human depression in terms of mathematical equations and also being serious about it. It only goes to prove that man is starting to view themselves as machines capable of predicting diverse feelings, the same as we predict reaction from a machine. Certainly we have known of this type of study long ago, its not new, what is new is the attention this one is recieving. Sure, I believe that we all share the same feelings of pain and happiness as every other human feels. But what scientists seem to miss is the environment that causes these feelings in each of us is completely different for each of us. What makes me happy may not make you happy, etc. That diversity is so large that it can not be contained in a simple mathematical equation but scientists will not accept this, and probally you will not either, it doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I see this for what it really is; another attempt to lump all humanity together as a unit for the convience of predicting future human reaction. Isn't this the goal of most scientists interested in human nature? If you agree, then you agree not with me but with what I was taught in my course studies. If you do not agree then you do not agree with university teachings, so this blog from me has nothing to do with me only with what I was taught. What is there to be gained? You think, everything is to be gained if we can only predict human reaction we may someday be able to stop a tradegy! Humans in general ( from the lame to the great ) do not like the idea that they can not find an answer to this or that problem. The ego can not accept that it can not do something, especially when the ego views what it is doing as logical. In this case the problem is human prediction. Scientist will always search for common factors to explain human action and reaction, then they will one day say, we have it. By having that belief that they now have an equation for predicting human reaction you and I will be fittable into this equation and the truth of our action will not be in the action but in the equation. I know this was a silly example of depression, but I hope you can see some danger with being placed in a equation, with being lumped together, as if your experiences in life as different and diverse as mine are does not matter because we all fit the mathematical equation. Silly I know, but you can see that people are being paid to research just this thing.
