I started replying to a comment on my Nothing offensive about this... post but then realized this was worth it's own post.
The question (regarding illegal immigration) was,
So who would you recommend we allow in, and why? What would you do with the millions already here? Would you advocate changing the constitution so that children born to illegals in the US do not automatically become citizens? Real curious about how sane folks look at this, and on first glance, you appear sane.

Well, here is the condensed version of my answer to the immigration crisis. It is a quite simple 4 step plan:
1. Close the borders--no point in doing anything else til this happens. There are endless issues with non-secure borders, not the least of which are terrorist infiltration and the accomodation of people who choose to hop over and birth children at will (often at legitimate taxpayers' expense).
2. Enforce our current laws, which means getting all law enforcement and other government agencies on board. Judges, cops and others shouldn't just be releasing the law offenders back out into the streets. Illegal immigrants are criminals and should be treated as such. They should be arrested and held for deportation.
3. Set up a workable deportation arrangement. Anyone who says this can't be done is either unimaginative or lazy.
4. Continue guest worker programs that work, discontinue ones that don't and create better ones always taking into consideration the pool of available unemployed, legal citizens.
That's all folks!!!
To the most sane person I have ever known: When Bill runs for President, I'd back you for VP!!! (I just realized that anyone else reading this will be questioning my sanity...)
All of your points are obvious and intelligent. Our problem is that the people who are currently in positions to improve on this just do not care or are afraid. Like you told me, not one presidential candidate has touched this issue.
