Confirming the safety of one amidst the tragedy of this...

The breaking news of the Virginia Tech shootings and the rising death toll up to 33, has led a few readers to inquire about the safety of Ashley Speegle, ex-girlfriend of Kasey Kahne, who attends the university.

TGOM is pleased to confirm her safety.

From Ashley:

I appreciate everyone's concern.  I am safe, as are all of my very close friends.  They still haven't sent out any sort of list of the ones killed/hurt in the shootings, but as you can imagine we are all anxiously waiting.  This is just scary beyond belief for everyone here... just praying for now for everyone and just sitting tight. Thanks again for your concern.

This... is Ashley Speegle

Ashley Speegle is the former girlfriend of NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Kasey Kahne. 

In the summer of 2004, Ashley was featured as a female Kasey Kahne fan in a USA Today article, "NASCAR not just for the boys anymore." TGOM isn't sure about the details of how the relationship evolved, but the pair dated for about 9 months in 2005 and broke up in the off season.

Ashley is currently a junior at Virginia Tech University and is a sister in the Delta Zeta sorority. She attended Bruton High School, where she played tennis and graduated in 2004 with high honors. 

Ashley (b. March 22, 1986) is the daughter of Dr. John H. and Elizabeth Speegle of Williamsburg, Va. and has an older sister, Katy (b. 1981).  She currently resides in Blacksburg, Va.
