ABC News - Mimicking the hijackers who executed the Sept. 11 attacks, insurgents reportedly tied to al Qaeda in Iraq considered using student visas to slip terrorists into the United States to orchestrate a new attack on American soil.

Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, recently testified that documents captured by coalition forces during a raid of a safe house believed to house Iraqi members of al Qaeda six months ago "revealed [AQI] was planning terrorist operations in the U.S."

At the time, Maples offered little additional insight into the possible terror plot. ABC News, however, has learned new details of what remains a classified incident that has been dealt with at the highest levels of government.

Sources tell ABC News that the plot may have involved moving between 10 and 20 suspects believed to be affiliated with al Qaeda in Iraq into the United States with student visas -- the same method used by the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who struck American targets on Sept. 11.

CAIR doesn't care to condemn this...

Why would anyone bother to read a whole statement from the Council on American Islamic Relations when the first sentence is a blatant lie:

"American Muslims have consistently condemned all acts of terrorism, whether carried out by individuals, groups or states."

Are you kidding me?

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group terrorist organization was founded by terrorists in 1994 and continues to support terrorist individuals, groups and states today.

In all of the daily emails I have received from CAIR since Hezbollah started the latest dustup in the middle east, not one has condemned Hezbollah for its actions against Israel. Not one has called for the release of the kidnapped victims, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.  Not one has called on Hezbollah to do anything. All have called for Israel to stand down.

And people around the world actually support this...

Urgent global security alert issued for this...

Interpol: USS Cole Bombing Mastermind Escapes From Prison

Interpol said Sunday that a man considered to be a mastermind of the USS Cole bombing is among those who have escaped from a prison in Yemen.

The international police agency has issued an "urgent global security alert" for Jamal Ahmed Badawi and 23 others who escaped from the prison Friday through a tunnel.

Interpol is calling the escapees "dangerous individuals."

A Yemeni security official announced the escape Friday, but provided few details. In a statement released Sunday, Interpol said at least 13 of the 23 escapees were convicted al-Qaida terrorists.

The USS Cole bombing killed 17 people in 2000.

Moving Beyond the 9/11 Staff Report on Terrorist Travel

This report covers the immigration histories of 94 terrorists who operated in the United States between the early 1990s and 2004, including six of the September 11th hijackers. Other than the hijackers, almost all of these individuals have been indicted or convicted for their crimes. The report builds on prior work done by 9/11 Commission and the Center for Immigration Studies, providing more information than has been previously been made public.

The findings show widespread terrorist violations of immigration laws. The report highlights the danger of our lax immigration system, not just in terms of who is allowed in, but also how terrorists, once in the country, used weaknesses in the system to remain here. The report makes clear that strict enforcement of immigration law – at American consulates overseas, at ports of entry, and within the United States – must be an integral part of our efforts to prevent future attacks on U.S. soil.

Among the findings:

• Of the 94 foreign-born terrorists who operated in the United States, the study found that about two-thirds (59) committed immigration fraud prior to or in conjunction with taking part in terrorist activity.
• Of the 59 terrorists who violated the law, many committed multiple immigration violations – 79 instances in all.
• Temporary visas were a common means of entering; 18 terrorists had student visas and another four had applications approved to study in the United States. At least 17 terrorists used a visitor visa—either tourist (B2) or business (B1).
• There were 11 instances of passport fraud and 10 instances of visa fraud; in total 34 individuals were charged with making false statements to an immigration official.
• In at least 13 instances, terrorists overstayed their temporary visas.
• In 17 instances, terrorists claimed to lack proper travel documents and applied for asylum, often at a port of entry.
• Fraud was used not only to gain entry into the United States, but also to remain, or “embed, “ in the country.
• Seven terrorists were indicted for acquiring or using various forms of fake identification, including driver’s licenses, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and immigration arrival records.
• Once in the United States, 23 terrorists became legal permanent residents, often by marrying an American. There were at least nine sham marriages.
• In total, 21 foreign terrorists became naturalized U.S. citizens.

"Qaeda" group claims rocket attack on U.S. ships

DUBAI (Reuters) - A group claiming links to al Qaeda said on Friday it had fired rockets at a U.S. Navy ships in Jordan and an Israeli port, according to an Internet statement.

The statement, which could not be authenticated, was signed by the Abdullah al-Azzam Brigades of the al Qaeda Organization in the Levant and Egypt.

It was carried on an Islamist Web site not often used by other groups which say they are linked to Osama bin Laden's network.

"A group of our mujahideen have targeted U.S. vessels in Jordan and (Israel's) Eilat port with three Katyusha rockets before safely returning to their base," the statement said.

"Zionists are a legitimate target and we warn the Americans, who are spreading their corruption throughout the world and who have stolen the wealth of the Muslim nation, to expect even more stinging attacks.

"This is our debut operation in Jordan," it added. "And as we have begun to destroy the throne of the Egyptian tyrant, we warn the Jordanian tyrant to release our jailed brothers and voluntarily abdicate before we force you to go."

Earlier this month, the group was one of several organizations that said it was behind the bomb attacks on a market and hotels in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. It has also claimed the October 2004 bombings at another Egyptian Red Sea resort.

Three rockets were fired at two U.S. Navy ships in Jordan's Aqaba port on Friday. They missed their targets and instead hit a warehouse and a hospital, killing a Jordanian soldier, and struck the Israeli port of Eilat.

A Jordanian security source said authorities were searching for three men after the attack, which was launched from an industrial warehouse area near the entrance to the city.

Won't it be a glorious day when Islamic leaders stop breeding, grooming and training terrorists?  If that ever happens that is.

NEW DELHI: Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Sri Lankan foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar outside his residence in Colombo.

Kadirgamar, 73, was taken to the National hospital, where all efforts by the surgeons to save him failed. The doctors pronounced him dead at around 12:15 IST. He was from Sri Lanka's Tamil Chirstian minority. [...]

Kadirgamar had often said that he was a potential target of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He had also led an international campaign to ban the Tigers as a terrorist organization.

In four communiqués and a 6:30 minute video clip issued today, August 3, 2005, Ansar al-Sunnah Army claims responsibility for a car bombing on an Iraqi police convoy in Samarra, the assassination of an investigation officer of al-Zeab Brigade in al-Dowra, and a follow up attack on the Marines in Haditha, allegedly firing a C5K rocket at a Humvee leaving the area. The video clip depicts scenes during and following the Haditha battle, including graphic footage of a U.S. Marine casualty, the mujahideen firing mortar shells, and the guns removed from the field afterwards.

Ok, enough of the terrorist muslim organizations for a minute. Let's look at how the US Muslim organization that doesn't have terrorist ties approaches this...

Free Muslims to address U.S. Government Officials About Future of Middle East

The Free Muslims Coalition (FMC), a national Muslim organization with 15 chapters, will give a presentation titled "The Struggle for the Future of the Middle East, Who Will Win?" at the National Defense University to a group of 50 government officials from the Department of Defense, Department of State and other agencies.

The presentation will be given by FMC president Kamal Nawash and FMC senior Islamic scholar, Dr. Ahmed Mansour.

Among the topics of discussion are the causes of terrorism by Muslims.  This topic is especially important following the terrorist attacks in London and Egypt. Following the attacks, many "experts" in Europe and the Middle East blamed the attacks on American and British foreign policies in Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan.  The Free Muslims Coalition (FMC) absolutely rejects this explanation and argues that those who offer such explanations are inadvertently helping the terrorists by repeating their insincere justifications for murder.

"Islamic" terrorism is the result of an ideology called "Political Islam." Political Islam is an ideology that totally rejects the separation of religion and state and instead seeks to create theocratic "Islamic States" based on the delusion that Muslims are not sufficiently religious and that if they were to return to a strict interpretation of God’s "laws" that the problems in the Muslim world would be solved. The problem with governments that chose to enforce "God’s laws" is that they don’t work. Every modern example of an "Islamic State" has been a total failure.  Iran, Afghanistan and the Sudan all failed to deliver the prosperity they envisioned or promised their followers.

Unfortunately, the failures of Iran, Afghanistan and Sudan have not quelled the desire to create theocratic Islamic states.  Instead, those who call for theocratic Islamic states continue to argue that theocracies are the best governments but that Iran, Afghanistan and Sudan "did not implement the system correctly." 

Ironically, the explanation that those governments that tried theocracies and failed "did not implement it correctly" is the same explanation given by the various communist states during the communist era.  This is why there were various versions of communism including, Marxism, Leninism, Stalinism, and Maoism.  They all said that communism works but that others did it incorrectly.  At the end they all failed because communism was an inherently a flawed system.

It is important to keep in mind that Islamic theocracies are not the only theocracies that fail.  Christian theocracies failed just as miserably.  In fact, it was only after Europe finally rejected the theocratic model that Europe experienced a renaissance and prospered.

More importantly than being inherently flawed, political Islam will almost definitely lead to terrorism and extremism.  Because political Islam is based on the desire to enforce God’s laws, it leads to religious absolutism.  Religious absolutism results from a belief that a particular faith represents the absolute truth and therefore must be accepted by everyone else without question.  Such an absolutist ideology encourages bigotry of the highest order and promotes extreme hatred of other faiths.

Since intellectual enlightenment respects diversity and rejects bigotry, religious absolutists, as a matter of faith tend to be anti-intellectual.  That is why absolutists are by nature, fundamentalists.  They preach literalist philosophies and demonstrate an intrinsic repulsion for modernity.  Political Islam, as was the case with political Christianity, abhors open societies and works to destroy any system that promotes tolerance and advances the cause of democracy.

This is why the Free Muslims Coalition constantly argues that the war on terrorism has to be more than a military battle.  It must also be an ideological battle and only Muslims can defeat the ideology of hate caused by political Islam.

To prove that political Islam leads to terrorism, consider that the phenomenon of Islamic terrorism is about 25 years old.  This is about the same time of the Islamic revolution in Iran which ignited political Islam throughout the Muslim world. There is a direct relationship between the rise of political Islam and the rise of Islamic terrorism. It should be noted that the positions of the Free Muslims Coalition does not mean that we don’t love our religion.  To the contrary, we are very devout Muslims.  It is because we love our religion that we take these positions.  Having said this, we again urge the American Muslim leadership and Muslim leaders throughout the world to come to terms with the fact that political Islam does not work.  We also encourage Muslim organizations to advocate for the separation of religion and state in the Muslim world.

Wow.  Honest acknowledgement of accountability and suggested solutions. How refreshing is this...?

CAIR's Hate Crime Nonsense

Should you read Unequal Protection: The Status of Muslim Civil Rights in the United States 2005, an annual report issued last week by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), you'll learn how the Muslim experience in America is worsening. Specifically, the number of “anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States” has gone up dramatically: from 42 cases in 2002, to 93 cases in 2003, to 141 in 2004.

The FBI calculates it a little differently than this...

The number of reported anti-Islamic crimes decreased from 481 in 2001 to 155 in 2002, a decrease of 67.8% and from 155 in 2002 to 149 in 2003, a decrease of 0.4%.

Now look at how the numbers are low compared to this...

2002: 931 anti-Semitic crimes were reported, a slight decrease from 1,043 in 2001. Overall, crimes against Jews and Jewish institutions comprised 12.5% of all the bias-motivated crimes - and 65% of the religious-based crime incidents.

2003: 927 anti-Semitic crimes were reported, a very slight decrease from 931 in 2002. Overall, crimes against Jews and Jewish institutions comprised 12.4% of all the bias-motivated crimes - and 69% of the religious-based crime incidents.

So, religious hate crimes constitute 17.9% of hate crimes and anti-semitism is 69% of that. Muslims can spew about unequal protection all they want, but the chosen ones have first dibs on the unequalness of this...

Imagine the difference CAIR could make if they expended this much effort focusing on the hate crimes perpetrated by Muslims in the name of Islam.  If they were interested in doing this, that is.  But instead they just fake it like this...

CAIR's non fatwa against this...

A few readers have asked to see the original text of The Council on American Islamic Relations' fatwa, so here it is.  Take note they take great care in choosing their words to broadly denounce targeting civilians.  I consider this a deliberate attempt to continue fooling the unknowing non-believers by using a familiar term which means one thing to us and nothing to them. This is also what makes the fatwa meaningless, since in Islam there are no such thing as civilians.  One has to admire their ability to use our language and instiable desire for political correctness to destroy us.   

U.S. MUSLIM RELIGIOUS COUNCIL ISSUES FATWA AGAINST TERRORISM

The Fiqh Council of North America wishes to reaffirm Islam's absolute condemnation of terrorism and religious extremism.

Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives. There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism. Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or any other method of attack is haram – or forbidden - and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not “martyrs.”

The Qur’an, Islam’s revealed text, states: "Whoever kills a person [unjustly]…it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind." (Qur’an, 5:32)

Prophet Muhammad said there is no excuse for committing unjust acts: "Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil." (Al-Tirmidhi)

God mandates moderation in faith and in all aspects of life when He states in the Qur’an: “We made you to be a community of the middle way, so that (with the example of your lives) you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind.” (Qur’an, 2:143)

In another verse, God explains our duties as human beings when he says: “Let there arise from among you a band of people who invite to righteousness, and enjoin good and forbid evil.” (Qur’an, 3:104)

Islam teaches us to act in a caring manner to all of God's creation. The Prophet Muhammad, who is described in the Qur’an as “a mercy to the worlds” said: “All creation is the family of God, and the person most beloved by God (is the one) who is kind and caring toward His family." In the light of the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah we clearly and strongly state: 1. All acts of terrorism targeting civilians are haram (forbidden) in Islam. 2. It is haram for a Muslim to cooperate with any individual or group that is involved in any act of terrorism or violence. 3. It is the civic and religious duty of Muslims to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to protect the lives of all civilians. We issue this fatwa following the guidance of our scripture, the Qur’an, and the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him. We urge all people to resolve all conflicts in just and peaceful manners. We pray for the defeat of extremism and terrorism. We pray for the safety and security of our country, the United States, and its people. We pray for the safety and security of all inhabitants of our planet. We pray that interfaith harmony and cooperation prevail both in the United States and all around the globe.

"The term 'civilians' does not exist in Islamic religious law.  There is no such term as 'civilians' in the modern Western sense. People are either of Dar Al-Harb or not."

Dar Al-Harb refers to the Muslim concept of the world being divided into two "houses," the House of Islam and the remaining territories, the House of War, or Dar Al-Harb.

Translated: It is perfectly acceptable to bomb what the west consider civilians if they are in locations not of Dar Al-Harb, i.e., New York City and London.

Those who accuse Muslims of silence aren't listening very well

The fact is that many prominent American Muslim groups have clearly and publicly denounced acts of terror in the name of Islam as barbaric, heinous and just plain wrong.  Though they religiously send out press releases and e-mail statements after every attack, somehow their message doesn't seem to penetrate.

Uh, yeah.  Sending out press releases and posting on websites isn't gonna cut it when members of your peaceful religion, following your esteemed religious leaders and holy texts, are blowing themselves and others up and cutting off heads.

Maybe, just maybe, the message isn't penetrating because the message isn't directed at the terrorists within their religion!

We were listening hard when the most popular and powerful Islamic organization in America promised to issue a fatwa against "terrorism and extremism."  CAIR has succeeded in perpetrating a deception on the American people and have actually fooled some into believing they have done this...

After the recent attacks in Great Britain and Egypt, Muslim scholars in the United States and Canada issued a fatwa condemning terrorism and religious extremism. - DiversityInc.com.

But as The Investigative Project on Terrorism points out, the fatwa is bogus.  Given it's importance and lack of MSM coverage, I'm hoping Steven Emerson won't mind me reprinting this...

The Counterterrorism Blog: The American Islamic Leaders' "Fatwa" is Bogus

This morning a group of American Islamic leaders held a press conference to announce a fatwa, or Islamic religious ruling, against “terrorism and extremism.” An organization called the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) issued the fatwa, and the Council on American - Islamic Relations (CAIR) organized the press conference, stating that several major U.S. Muslim groups endorsed the fatwa.

In fact, the fatwa is bogus. Nowhere does it condemn the Islamic extremism ideology that has spawned Islamic terrorism. It does not renounce nor even acknowledge the existence of an Islamic jihadist culture that has permeated mosques and young Muslims around the world. It does not renounce Jihad let alone admit that it has been used to justify Islamic terrorist acts. It does not condemn by name any Islamic group or leader. In short, it is a fake fatwa designed merely to deceive the American public into believing that these groups are moderate. In fact, officials of both organizations have been directly linked to and associated with Islamic terrorist groups and Islamic extremist organizations. One of them is an unindicted co-conspirator in a current terrorist case; another previous member was a financier to Al-Qaeda.

I spoke with Judea Pearl, father of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl who told me that the fatwa was “vacuous because it does not name the perpetrators of Islamic terrorist theologies and leaders of Islamic movements like Yousef Al Qaradawi, Osama Bin Laden, Ayman Al Zawahari, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc.” Pearl told me that these groups are “trying to perpetrate a deception on the American public.”

Officials of both groups have been linked to various terrorist organizations:

The Chairman of the Fiqh Council, Taha Jaber Al-Alwani, is an unindicted co-conspirator in the case against Sami al-Arian, the alleged North American leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, whose trial began in June 2005 in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Alwani has been named in court documents as an official of several entities in northern Virginia suspected of being connected to terrorist financing. Documents released in the Al Arian trial show that Alwani funded the Islamic Jihad front groups in Tampa.

Another past trustee of the Fiqh Council, Abdurrahman Alamoudi, is serving a 23-year prison sentence for illegal financial dealings with Libya and immigration fraud, has admitted to his part in a plot to assassinate the Saudi Crown Prince, and has vocally announced his support for the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Additionally Alamoudi was just named by Treasury as having been a financier for Al Qaeda.

In 1998, Fiqh Council member Sheikh Muhammad al-Hanooti, gave a speech calling for jihad against the United States and the United Kingdom, saying that “Allah will curse the Americans and British” and “Allah, the curse of Allah will become true on the infidel Jews and on the tyrannical Americans.” Additionally, Hanooti is strongly linked to Hamas, having served on the board of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP). A 2002 INS memo extensively documented IAP’s support for HAMAS and noted that the “facts strongly suggest” that IAP is “part of HAMAS’ propaganda apparatus.”

On October 28, 2000, Muzammil Siddiqui, the President of FCNA, at a rally in Lafayette Park in Washington D.C., said, “America has to learn -- if you remain on the side of injustice, the wrath of God will come!"

In the past 4 years, several CAIR officials have been convicted of or charged with various terrorism-related offenses. 

CAIR has championed and defended officials of Islamic terrorist groups including Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzook, Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian, Palestinian Islamic Jihad fundraiser Fawaz Damra, and the radical Egyptian cleric Wagdy Ghoneim.

CAIR has repeatedly attacked the prosecutions of Islamic terrorists arrested and/or convicted since 9-11 and has attacked the government’s freezing of Islamic terrorist fronts as part of a “war against Islam” by the United States.

CAIR has led protests against the deportation of radical Islamic clerics who have called for Jihad or who have been fundraisers for Hamas.

CAIR has asserted that the indictment of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian on conspiracy to murder more than 100 people was “politically motivated” and instigated by “the attack dogs of the pro-Israeli lobby."

CAIR has been named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by the family of former FBI official John O’Neill, who was killed on 9-11.

One of the signatories to today’s fatwa is Fawaz Damra who was convicted of immigration fraud related to his ties to Palestinian Islamic Jihad and denaturalized. He is currently awaiting a deportation hearing.

Another signatory, the Muslim American Society, is a front for the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States and whose publications have repeatedly supported suicide bombings.

MEMRI - Fiighting Terrorism: Recommendations by Arab Reformists

The question of how to fight Islamic terrorism preoccupies many Arab reformists who are working to denounce Islamist thought, to encourage independent and critical thinking, and to establish values of democracy and human rights in the Muslim world. For example, in February 2005, a group of reformists submitted to the U.N. a request that it establish an international court to judge Muslim clerics who incite to violence and bloodshed. The request was examined by the U.N. legal counseland distributed to the U.N. Security Council.

Following the July 7, 2005 London bombings, Arab reformists further expanded their criticism and honed their arguments, not only regarding Muslim extremists, but also regarding the European countries, particularly Britain, which allows extremist activity within its borders in the name of protecting individual rights. They also increased their criticism of the silent Muslim majority and moderate Muslim intellectuals, who capitulate to Islamist pressure and do not speak out decisively against it.

My favorite highlight is this...

Egyptian commentator and Al-Sharq Al-Awsat columnist Muna Al-Tahawi brought up the issue of the aspirations of some intellectuals to please their target audience: "The time has come for us to declare resolutely that the claim heard whenever Muslims stage a terror attack – 'George Bush made me do it' – is a stupid one… The time has come for us to stop rebuking others. We all know the extent to which extremism has increased in our societies, but it is easy to ignore this fact and to say 'we aren't like that' instead of dealing with the matter…

Only problem I see with their suggestions is that many of them rely on followers of Islam to solve a problem within Islam that many of its followers don't consider a problem.  Isn't that a problem?

So far it has been.  The most prominent Islamic organization here in America is a known supporter of terrorism and has only recently begun to publicly, not to say sincerely, denounce terrorists.  In fact, today, they will issue a FATWA against terrorists and extremism.  Which, of course, stands to make us an even better terrorist target.  C'est la vie.

Why did one of the London bombers call someone affiliated with the Islamic Center in Queens, NY before bombing London?  And why would the receipient of the call deny this...? Authorities said that in addition to the eldest bomber, Mohammed Sidique Khan, two of the other bombers also had ties to the U.S.

What?  How can this be?   American Muslims are peaceful, right?  They wouldn't have anything to do with blowing up our allies just because they're non believers... right?

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - The biochemist detained in Cairo in connection with the London bombings is an intelligent, quiet young man who advanced to one of Egypt's most prestigious research centres and whose lower middle-class family spent heavily for him to study abroad, neighbours say.

Magdy Mahmoud Mustafa el-Nashar, 33, had been teaching chemistry at Leeds University in northern England, and returned to Egypt a week before the deadly July 7 bombings in the British capital.

He was arrested four of five days ago in Cairo after British officials supplied his name to Egyptian authorities over the weekend, a government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was revealing information not announced by the Interior Ministry.

In questioning by Egyptian officials, he denied any role in the attacks and said he was planning to return to Leeds after a vacation in Egypt, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. He was still being held, the ministry said, without saying whether he would be handed over to Britain.

British authorities said they found signs in el-Nashar's Leeds home that quantities of a compound called TATP, or triacetone triperoxide, had been converted into a powerful explosive. [...]

But by night, Khan was preparing to become one of the four homicide bombers who carried out the London terror attacks last week. Three years after this photograph was taken at the Hillside primary school, Khan triggered a 10-pound bomb at the Edgware Road subway station, killing at least seven people.

At 8:49 AM BST this morning in London, an incident on the Metropolitan Line between Liverpool Street and Aldgate is reported to British Transport Police.  As of 3:46PM BST, 33 have been reported dead.

al-Zarqawi is Dead

Baghdad, 2 June (AKI) - The Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq - died on Friday and his body is in Fallujah's cemetary, an Iraqi Sunni sheikh, Ammar Abdel Rahim Nasir, has told the Saudi on-line newspaper Al-Medina. He claims that gunfights which broke out in Fallujah in the last few days involved militants trying to protect the insurgency leader's tomb from a group of American soldiers patrolling the area.

During a telephone conversation from the city of Fallujah with the Saudi newspaper, Nasir said al-Zarqawi was taken there after being injured in the city of Ramadi around three weeks ago, and may have been treated by two doctors who had worked with his aides in Baghdad. He said the two doctors had stopped a serious haemorrhage in al-Zarqawi's intestines, but that after his condition worsened last week, the militant died on Friday.

Nasir adds that in his will the insurgent leader left the order that no funeral should be held for him and the right to announce his death should be left to the al-Qaeda leadership in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden.

The Al-Medina newspaper reports that it also called the headmaster of a school in Fallujah, who preferred to remain anonymous, but confirmed that many people in the city were aware of the fact that al-Zarqawi had recently been taken to the city.

Sheikh Nasir's claims appear to correspond with reports several weeks ago that al-Zarqawi had been injured and taken to Ramadi hospital for emergency treatment, and with messages on the Internet talking of two Arab doctors accompanying him. Al-Zarqawi was reported to have been seen at the hospital on April 27. The hospital's director told an Iraq-based newspaper that US troops later surrounded and raided the entire building, searching for the Jordanian militant.

Only two days ago, an audio message attributed to al-Zarqawi was posted on the Internet, in which he assured his followers that he had only been lightly injured. Following the message, the US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned countries neighbouring Iraq not to give any medical assistance to al-Zarqawi. "Our current theory is that he is in Iraq," he said. "Were a neighbouring country to take him in and provide medical assistance or haven for him, they obviously would be associating themselves with a major linkage in the al-Qaeda network, and a person who has a great deal of blood on his hands," Rumsfeld continued. "And that's something that people would want to take note of."
