Kimora Lee Simmons Endorses Hillary Clinton

Hillkim_2

Fashion mogul, business entrepreneur, author, top model and mom Kimora Lee Simmons today endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Simmons cited Clinton's ability to deliver real change for working families.

"I have known Hillary for many years and have seen her work passionately on many issues, including poverty, education, and prison reform," said Simmons. "I'm proud to support Hillary because she has the experience necessary to deliver real solutions and turn our country around. In addition, seeing Hillary as President would be an inspiration to my daughters, knowing that they too can be anything they want if they have the determination to make it happen. As a mother, I have learned that you must lead with your head, not just your heart, and I'm confident that Hillary will be the President to bring our country together and deliver a brighter future for all Americans."

Kimora Told: No 'Perk'ing

Kls

Spoiled diva Kimora Lee Simmons has been stripped of her latest fashion accessory - a parking permit proclaiming she's on "official business" for the city's Correction Department, officials said yesterday.

The placard was a gift from a jail guard who moonlights as her chauffeur.

But he will likely face just a slap on the wrist, and Simmons won't have to model prison stripes.

An eagle-eyed Post photographer last week snapped her Cadillac Escalade - and the placard - while it was parked outside Barneys on the Upper East Side.

The model-turned-fashion queen was inside at the time, doing some shopping with her actor boyfriend, Djimon Hounsou.

Simmons, the fashion-icon wannabe and former wife of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, claimed she didn't know how she got the pass.

"I don't know. I don't know," she babbled.

"I'm not driving!"

Authorities declined to name the offending officer/chauffeur and identified him only as a 10-year department veteran.

The officer had properly acquired the pass when he worked in the department's emergency-services unit.

But he should have turned it in two years ago, after he was promoted and transferred to a Rikers Island job, said Deputy Commissioner Stephen Morello.

"With emergency services, it was a position where he could be called on short notice to a facility in a neighborhood where parking was an issue," Morello said.

"But at Rikers Island, that's no longer an issue."

Morello said the department had approved the officer's extracurricular driving job.

Simmons doesn't appear to be in legal jeopardy despite breaking the rules to score prime parking spots, authorities said.

"The placard seems, in this case, to be the responsibility of the officer, and DOC [Department of Correction] has already retrieved it from the officer," Morello said.

The officer is likely to face, at worst, internal discipline, possibly a brief suspension or fine.

A spokesman for the union representing correction officers said none of its members has asked for representation against administrative charges involving parking passes.

The Bloomberg administration is in the midst of a crackdown on the illegal use of parking permits.

Kimora Lee Strips for PeTa

Wearing nothing but a stunning pair of angel wings and holding her dog, Zoe, supermodel and fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons goes au naturel for peta2's gorgeous new ad campaign, "Be an Angel for Dogs." In the ad, Simmons shows off her naked desire to get people to make dogs a part of their families--and not leave them tied up outside or cooped up at home alone all day.

"Play with them ... take them for long walks ... don't ever cage or chain them," says Simmons. The campaign will debut in magazines soon and is being launched to coincide with national Unchain a Dog Month, which is observed every January.

Millions of dogs are left chained and unattended in back yards across the U.S. every day--shivering in the dead of winter and suffering in the extreme heat of summer. They are frequently denied even the most basic care, including adequate food; fresh water; shelter from the elements; and preventive, basic protection from tormenting parasites like fleas, ticks, flies, mosquitoes, and worms. Living day after day in isolation causes these social, pack-oriented animals to suffer from loneliness and distress. Intensive confinement and a lack of socialization can drive dogs insane and make them dangerous.

In an exclusive interview with peta2, Simmons says, "You cannot just chain up an animal. The chains are heavy, it's cruel. Dogs need to run and play." She urges people to do whatever they can to help neglected backyard dogs. "Everybody should do the best they can, because a lot of little 'best-you-cans' add up to a lot of saved animals," says Simmons.

What's more, Simmons has donated more than $20,000 to PETA to help severely underprivileged dogs living in low-income, rural areas. Thanks to her generosity, more than 100 dogs have received sturdy, weather-tight doghouses with a shade overhang for summer, straw bedding, toys, and new collars and harnesses. Dogs found with injuries or illness have also received emergency medical care--treatment that their guardians might not have been able to afford. Simmons' funding of PETA's program provides not only truckloads of houses but also staff to deliver them, truck rental and gas, and the equipment to dig up fences and posts that commonly tangle dogs' tethers.

The wings Simmons wears were designed by renowned costumemaker Martin Izquierdo, the genius behind Victoria's Secret's iconic angel wings, who adapted his design and created Simmons' wings out of 100 percent cruelty-free synthetic materials.

Kimora Lee Simmons Works the Crowd at Scoop at The Shore Club

Kimora Lee Simmons hosted a launch party last night of her new line KLS which will be sold at the Scoop boutique inside The Shore Club.

We told you about this the other day but thanks to tipster Gregg we have this shot of her posing with some fans. Dayum, girl is tall. Interestingly, she didn't stay at the Shore Club. Instead she headed over to a suite at the Ritz-Carlton. And she told the Miami Herald that she liked the Setai spa. Whoops.

Kimora Lee Signs for Toy Drive

Kimora Lee Simmons is a triple threat: mother, model and mogul.

On Wednesday, the icon swept through Macy's for what she described as the "fabulosity" of giving.

Her style is over the top, her smile is big enough to brighten any room, but it's her heart that is just fabulous.

"There's a lot of people and children that I've come to say hi to, and hopefully they've all brought toys for a toy drive that I am doing for Children's Treatment and Diagnostics Center, which helps sick children," Simmons said.

The toys will be delivered to the center in Broward County, a cause close to Simmons' heart."It's really important for me to sort of show people that a very big part of fabulosity is giving back to the community and sharing of your time," she said.

The first 25 in line to bring an unwrapped toy walked away with a signed copy of Simmons' book and a picture

"It was awesome," fan Noelia Veccio said. "She's as fabulous as she is on TV as she is in person. She was wonderful."

Simmons, decking the halls in South Florida with style, is the driving force behind the popular fashion line Baby Phat, star of the hit reality TV series "Life in the Fab Lane" and author of "Fabulosity."

The sultry celebrity drew hundreds to Macy's in Aventura Mall. The 6-foot symbol of success transformed a line of basic tees to a mega-lifestyle collection of perfumes, jewelry and the slinky Baby Phat feline logo.

"Baby Phat," Simmons said. "The first three words: Hot, sexy, Simmons."

Simmons went from Aventura to the Macy's at the Pembroke Lakes Mall.

Kimora Lee Simmons Hardworker, Skips the Clubs

We got the nice Kimora.

CEO/fashion designer/reality show subject/single mom and sometime-hellcat Kimora Lee Simmons swept into town this week with Art Basel to promote her clothing lines Baby Phat and KLS and to attend some benefits.

Sitting in her ocean-front suite at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach on Wednesday, picking at a chicken breast and getting her eyelashes curled, Simmons was badly jetlagged. She and her two children had just rolled in from China, where she had "a little work, a lot of pleasure."

But aside from a few tense moments, like when her makeup artist stepped on Simmons' frisky Pomeranian Simba, the self-proclaimed diva was -- we cannot believe we are saying this -- totally nice.

How much time do you spend in Miami?

Not enough. Lately, I go pretty much between New York and L.A.

Where do you stay?

At the Ritz or Setai. South Beach is a little bit busy for me. I like a little quiet, like in Boca.

What do you like about Miami?

There's great shopping and lots of eclectic people.

Where do you shop?

There is some good shopping in Aventura and Bal Harbour, but I don't usually go shopping. A lot of times designers or stores will send me their collection or a lot of people who know me pick out pieces and put them aside.

Do you go to spas here?

Yeah, here [at the Ritz] and at the Setai. I usually love to get massages, and I can only get them when I travel. I like to get a facial on the road -- a little cleansing, moisturizing treatment.

Where do you like to eat?

I like the Forge; [the owners] are very good friends of mine. Also, that Italian place on the strip. What's it called?

Quattro? Yes, Quattro! You're good!

Where do you go in Miami?

I don't like to go out in public. If I go to the pool, they take my picture, and it's so invasive.

Well, do you have a wild story about Miami? Even an old one?

I've been modeling since I was 12 years old and have never hit the clubs. I've always been very hard-working. . . . Sometimes I wonder, will it hit me someday when I'm 35, 40, that I never went out?

Macy's Big Phat Suit

Kimora Lee Simmons overcharged Macy's for her beauty products and then refused to pay back the extra profit, according to a lawsuit filed last week in Manhattan Supreme Court.

In September 2006, four months after Simmons separated from her multimillionaire husband, Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons, she signed an agreement to provide Macy's with her line of cosmetics.

But then she allegedly jacked up the price of her beauty products.

Simmons declined comment.

Kimora New Phat Fashions Creative Director

Kellwood Company announced today that Kimora Lee Simmons, currently Baby Phat president and creative director, has been elevated to the new post of creative director for Phat Fashions in addition to her current responsibilities, according to Robert C. Skinner, Jr., Kellwood chairman, president and chief executive officer.

"Kimora's ability to create the Baby Phat brand universe from a simple tee shirt on the runway over 10 years ago and turn it into a multi-million dollar global business today -- is truly an amazing feat in today's mercurial fashion world," said Skinner. "We believe her innate sense of style, extensive fashion background, and her gift to mesh unique trends that resonate with her core audience is readily transferable to the men's Phat business. She will have the oversight of the creative direction for both the Baby Phat and Phat Farm family of brands. Her business savvy and understanding of the Phat Fashions' brands and consumer following are very valuable to the company as we continue to build the aura of Phat worldwide," added Skinner.

Kimora was Russell Simmons' business partner for many years and she has a keen understanding of the Phat legacy. "I look forward to interpreting the Phat essence for today's man as well as the Baby Phat woman," commented Kimora Lee Simmons. "This is a natural extension for me. Our consumer -- man, woman, or child -- wants to be immersed in the aspirational Phat lifestyle and it's my role to assure them that every product they touch is authentic to the Phat philosophy and creative vision."

Yesterday in a separate announcement, the company said Russell Simmons had left Phat Fashions to focus on his other business interests.

Russell Simmons Steps Down from Phat Fashions

Russell Simmons announced this was the right time for him to step down as CEO of Phat Fashions in order to pursue his other varied interests. Simmons sold Phat Fashions and all of its brands and licenses to Kellwood in 2004. Following the sale, Simmons has held the title of CEO of Phat Fashions, while also developing his own businesses in the jewelry, fragrance, personal health and entertainment industries.

"Russell Simmons is one of the true pioneers of the urban lifestyle fashion business," said Skinner. "He leaves an outstanding creative legacy at Phat Fashions, and we will continue to build on that heritage as Phat Fashions continues to break through boundaries and set the standard for innovative design and high quality sportswear."

Simmons commented, "I have enjoyed my association with Kellwood over the last three years. We have accomplished much during this short period of time -- and I leave the division and the brand in great hands. There are so many things I want to achieve, and this is the appropriate moment for me to
move on to my next business venture."

Simmons founded Phat Fashions' Phat(R) and Phat Farm(R) brands in 1992, introducing a new and original approach to urban menswear. Phat Fashions' womenswear brand Baby Phat(R) was launched in 1999. Both brands were purchased by Kellwood as part of its 2004 acquisition. Following Mr. Simmons' departure, all of Phat Fashions' brands will continue to be operated, distributed and licensed by Phat Fashions and Kellwood, except for Russell Simmons-Argyleculture and Atman, which will become his trademark properties.

Dallas Voice: Caushun Was A Hoax

In 2003, a New York-based rapper began generating serious buzz. Caushun (pronounced Caution) was a stage name taken by Jason Herndon, a gay hairstylist who once appeared on “America’s Next Top Model.” Soon reports surfaced that Russell’s now-estranged wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, was going to sign Caushun to her Baby Phat record label. Then came heaps of press: features in The Advocate, Newsweek, London Observer and The New York Times.

But the debut album, “Shock and Awe” — slated to drop during Pride Month of 2003 — never surfaced. That’s because Caushun was a hoax: a J.T. LeRoy for the hip-hop community.

Last month, Caushun’s “manager,” Ivan Matias, told Allhiphop.com that he wrote and performed all of Caushun’s material. It all began as a joke. Matias, a straight dude, called into a radio station and pretended to be a flamingly gay rhyme-spitter. He cut some demos and then recruited Herndon to play the public figure. Last year, the ruse began to unravel when Herndon began facing charges of identity theft and grand larceny.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Now the blogosphere is replete with unsubstantiated reports that Herndon and Matias are shopping a book titled “The Gay Superhead.” This tell-all apparently chronicles Caushun’s wave of publicity, and promises to expose Kimora Lee’s alleged sexual affair with a woman and Russell’s alleged sexual affair with a male record executive.

New Couple Alert: Djimon and Kimora!

From E! - Planet Gossip Blog:

Kimora and Djimon

"Djimon Hounsou may be the new face—and body—of Calvin Klein underwear, but his focus these days may be on Baby Phat lingerie.

The Blood Diamond star was spotted last night getting quite cozy with Kimora Lee Simmons.

The two hit the Dom Pérignon-hosted private dinner for Oscar winner Forest Whitaker at Hollywood hot spot Boulevard 3. "They were in the Library Bar, kissing," a tipster reports. "They definitely looked like a couple."

Another source tells me the two have known each other for years through their modeling work, but recently reconnected at a post-Oscar party.

"They're friends who are having a good time getting to know each other a little better," Simmons' rep told me this afternoon. Hounsou's rep could not be reached.

Hounsou was most recently linked to Cameron Diaz after they were spotted dancing together at Hyde. Their reps insist they're just friends. Simmons was famously married to Russell Simmons for eight years until they announced their split in March 2006. They remain co-owners of the Baby Phat fashion line.

The new lovebirds weren't the only thing that had partygoers chatting at Whitaker's soiree. The guest list included Oprah Winfrey, Mary J. Blige, Quincy Jones, Prince and Herbie Hancock. There was a dinner for about 30 people, followed by a party for 100. Whitaker stayed until the very end, not heading home until about 2 a.m.

But the night's most memorable moment probably goes to Chris Rock and Chris Tucker. "They had a Michael Jackson dance-off," a source says. "They played a block of Jackson songs, so there was a lot of moonwalking and crotch-grabbing."

h/t Seriously? OMG! WTF?

Burlington Coat trying to fix fake-fur faux pas

Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. conceded yesterday that it had improperly promoted a Baby Phat down jacket as having faux fur trim when the trim was real fur.

Stacy Haigney, general attorney for Burlington Coat Factory, said the company was not trying to deceive customers. "Somebody made a mistake," he said. "That's all that happened here."

The Humane Society of the United States said it faxed a letter to Burlington officials yesterday threatening legal action. It said the jacket, which came in two versions, had labels saying the trim was made of raccoon or coyote fur from China. But a company circular, its Web site, and signs within stores said the fur trim was fake, said Michael Makarian, the humane society's executive vice president.

"Especially during this holiday season, we don't want customers thinking they're buying faux fur and they're really buying fur that was ripped or peeled off the backs of animals," he said.

Haigney said stores had been ordered to take down incorrectly worded posters. The company was changing the product description on its Web site last night.

The mission of the D.E.F.TM. is to raise money for the development and empowerment of people and communities in Africa where diamonds are a natural resource. The delegation was accompanied on its 9-day trip by Sally Morrison and her team from the Diamond Information Center (DIC), which extended the invitation for the trip. The delegation was also accompanied by an award-winning photographic and film production team, led by Selwyn Hinds.

The fact-finding mission included a visit by the delegation with His Excellency President Festus Mogae of Botswana, as well as a tour of Botswana's Jwaneng Mine, the largest diamond mine in the world by value, the BDVC Diamond Sort House and the Eurostar diamond cutting and polishing facility. Prepaid cards extend a hand to the unbanked

Hip-hop and clothing mogul Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records, targeted a new market in 2005 when he launched two Visa-branded prepaid cards, the Babyphat Prepaid Visa Card and Prepaid Visa Rushcard.

The cards are designed to reach African-American and Latino consumers without access to checking accounts and were launched after Simmons' company, Rush Communications, noticed that online orders for Phat Farm and Baby Phat clothes were being purchased by consumers who didn’t have credit or debit cards.

"Financial empowerment is the last leg of the Civil Rights movement," Simmons said in 2005.

In the United States, there are more than 40 million unbanked and underbanked consumers. Of those that are unbanked, 46 percent are African American; 34 percent Hispanic and other; and 14 percent Caucasian, according to Chicago-based The Center for Financial Services Innovation.

But, Simmons' cards have come under fire because of high activation and transaction fees. Critics have even accused Simmons of using a good cause to further fill his pockets.

Simmons, although an unlikely prepaid-card candidate, realized what financial-industry innovators have known: Prepaid cards can help underbanked and unbanked consumers build financial independence while helping deployers pull in commercial revenue.

According to MasterCard International, prepaid-card transactions are expected to reach $275 billion by the end of 2009.

And in 2006, an estimated $117 billion in purchases will be made using prepaid products, whether in the form of gift cards, payroll cards or renewable prepaid cards issued under the MasterCard and Visa brands.

Lock and (re)load

Prepaid cards also have opened an avenue for ATM-transaction growth.

"As long as growth continues in the prepaid space, like EBT, etc., the ATM will always be at the forefront," said Ben Psillas, president and founder of Allpoint Network, now owned by Cardtronics.

The Baby Phat and Rush cards, among other Visa and MasterCard International-branded cards, can be loaded at ATMs, self-service kiosks or by direct deposit.

Tescher said there is now a broader array of kiosk and ATM providers offering issuance and reload services at the ATM. And as the market continues, so will the transaction opportunities provided by ATM manufacturers.

Burnaby, British Columbia-based TIO Networks Corp. recently launched its 100 E-Wiz financial-services kiosks in convenience stores throughout Texas. The kiosk provides bill-pay and prepaid-card load and reload functionalities.

In addition, Monrovia, Calif.-based Green Dot Financial Network, a subsidiary of Green Dot Corp., launched in 2005 a network of prepaid reload stations at more than 35,000 locations.

"The real potential for these cards is as functionality increases for these products they really do become substitutes for bank accounts," said Jennifer Tescher, CFSI's director. "Non-bank prepaid card companies are using prepaid cards to tap into the market. FIs are considering prepaid cards as a product to offer when someone doesn't qualify for a checking account."

Prepaid cards give unbanked and underbanked consumers financial flexibility. One Babyphat user on prepaidcardforum.com, an industry blog, said she liked the card because there was "no credit check" involved.

"There is a lot of interest in using prepaid to build credit," Tescher said. "There's nothing like that at the moment, but credit bureaus are interested in the data."

Workin' hard for the money

As prepaid-card popularity grows, issues such as activation and transaction related fees will arise.

"Prepaid cards that are overly expensive don't make sense," Tescher said.

However, she added that prepaid cards reduce the amount of cash-in-pocket and provides greater financial access.

One area where prepaid cards are making headway is in the payroll-card space.

"On the payroll side, there is significant potential; but for the most part banks see this as a way to help their commercial customers solve a problem or reduce costs. They don’t really think or know much about the end user," Tescher said.

Payroll cards utilizing the prepaid format have become increasingly popular among employers.

Frank D'Angelo, president of Metavante Corp.'s Payment Solutions Group, a subsidiary of Milwaukee-based Marshall & Ilsley Corp., said the company began processing payroll cards because of their synergy with debit cards and market opportunity.

"There are a lot of similarities between the normal debit and prepaid space," D'Angelo said. "When you look at the underbanked or unbanked, they don't have access to checking accounts. Prepaid cards give that underbanked consumer the same kind of flexibility."

According to CFSI, immigrants make up 32 percent of the total U.S. unbanked population; and unless those workers have social security cards opening a bank account or even applying for a prepaid card is off limits.

So to further tap unto the underbanked market, Metavante added bill-payment features to its payroll-card processing solution allowing consumers to pay bills, check account balances and order goods online.

D'Angelo suspects the industry will thrive over the next few years both in the U.S. and Europe.

"Security, flexibility and the cost of electronic transactions is easier," he said. "(Transactions) ride existing telephone lines and networks; you don't have to create anything new."

Simmons' Botswana Mission

Russell Simmons, on a 9-day fact-finding mission in South Africa and Botswana with the Simmons Jewelry Company delegation, met with local Botswanian media this morning to discuss his observations from the trip thus far. The delegation, which has already toured the largest and richest diamond mine for value in the world in Jwaneng, Botswana yesterday, as well as the mine hospital and a primary school in town, where they spent time with the local students, is eagerly looking forward to the rest of the exploratory trip.

Quoting this...
Russell Simmons: "We are encouraged to see, firsthand, how the diamond industry in Botswana empowers the people of this nation. It makes a dramatic difference in the quality of life of the people of Botswana. After meeting with President Festus Mogae, I am even more encouraged by his vision for the future of Botswana. The partnership between the government of Botswana and DeBeers can serve as a model for other extractive industries in Africa."

Mounties have seized hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of suspected counterfeit clothing after a raid at a Calgary shipping yard yesterday.

Acting on a tip from border services agents at the Vancouver shipping port, plainclothes RCMP searched a shipping container at the CN Rail yard at 5310 27 St. S.E., as well as a Calgary business, which turned up a treasure trove of suspected fake designer goods.

RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb says it was a substantial seizure.

"It's in the neighbourhood of several hundred thousand dollars because it could be sold for as much as or near what the real goods are actually worth," Webb said.

The search of the 12-metre shipping container, which originated in Hong Kong, found more than 200 boxes of goods bearing the brand names Diesel, Armani, Nike, Hugo Boss, Puma, Baby Phat, Sean Jean, Prada and Chanel.

At the business where the clothing was alleged to be headed, Mounties uncovered more suspected counterfeit clothing from Rock and Republic, Phat Farm, Tommy Bahama, Juicy Couture, Adidas, FUBU, Polo Ralph Lauren, Serengeti, G Unit, and Miss Sixty.

Webb said police are now trying to determine if there are ties to organized crime.

What the public may not realize about buying counterfeit goods, Webb said, is it may fund organized crime.

Charges haven't been laid.

The Bethel ANGELS

The Bethel ANGELS, an organization that works to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, will receive an award for its efforts from the National HIV/AIDS Partnership next week.

The award comes at a crossroads for the organization, which is without a permanent home, seeking more funding and looking to transition from a faith-based offshoot to a non-profit organization.

The Bethel ANGELS, part of Bethel A.M.E. Church on Spring Street, were selected from 120 nominees in the categories of communications, programs and policy.

The Morristown-based organization, which stands for AIDS Network Giving Education, Love and Support, was one of three recipients of the program award, which recognizes programs that change the behaviors of a community toward AIDS and encourages awareness or acceptance of those affected by the disease.

A Morristown first

It is the first group from Morristown to win an award from the NHAP, said Josh Sekine, a spokesman for NHAP.

"They were chosen really because of their dedication to the African-American community in Morristown," Sekine said.

The local organization is best known for its auxiliary group of women who knit quilts in the memory of loved ones who have died from the disease.

So far, the group has made six of the 12-foot-square-foot quilts of 48 panels, that were attached to other quilts by the national AIDS quilt organization. They have also made about 160 quilts commemorating infants and children killed by the disease.

But the organization's focus more recently has been on encouraging AIDS testing. ANGELS has brought in professionals to conduct the 20-minute "rapid test," at various locations and events in Morristown, said Emma Martin, an ANGELS founder.

Martin said that the organization had to battle stigma surrounding AIDS testing, but the message seems to have gotten through to younger generations.

"We found that young people are more ready to do it than older," Martin said.

Local complications

The fact that ANGELS deals primarily with the Morristown community also somewhat complicates matters, said Rev. Alfonso Sherald, pastor of the church.

"I think Morristown people are afraid to do it because Morristown is small and they're afraid of (being seen) walking up for AIDS testing," Sherald said.

Sekine said that the testing was likely one of the reasons the group was chosen to get the award.

"Not only are they giving these educational programs, but they are giving people the opportunity to get tested in a non-intimidating way," Sekine said.

The organization also holds workshops for men, women, children and the elderly on everything from general HIV/AIDS knowledge to the topic of men in heterosexual relationships who also secretly have sex with men.

The ANGELS also provide transportation for those afflicted with AIDS to doctor's appointments, pharmacies, supermarkets or wherever they need to go.

Sekine also cited the ANGELS' week of prayer for the healing of HIV and AIDS, their partnership with the Eric Johnson House in Morristown and Hope House in Dover, and various other events and services.

Pleasant surprise

Martin, who nominated the ANGELS group for the award, said she was "pleasantly surprised," when she was told they had beaten out other nominees, who she expected to be tough competitors, especially given the organization's small size.

"I think they probably looked at what we provide to the community, the knowledge, the workshops the closeness to the community," Martin said. "The dedication and commitment and out concern over HIV and AIDS. All of that I think probably helped to bring about this award."

Sekine said that the award may put the ANGELS in consideration to become a partner organization of NHAP. That would allow the ANGELS to call on the national organization for guest speakers, materials and other support, as well as allow NHAP to do the same with the ANGELS.

Among the high-profile figures who are NHAP partners are Baby Phat clothing company president Kimora Lee Simmons, BET personality AJ Calloway, and the late Corretta Scott King.

"Their model of how they do it is something other communities should take up, not only in the African-American communities," Sekine said.

Big vision

The 10 to 12 members who formed ANGELS in 1999 runs on a budget of about $15,000 and is funded by the African American Fund of New Jersey and donations from the Bethel A.M.E. Church congregation.

The organization has been without a home for about a month, after being evicted from offices in the residents' center of Manahan Village. They are currently operating in the church.

While looking for more sources of money, the ANGELS also are aiming to establish themselves as a nonprofit organization.

A lil' bit of coercion

Lil' Kim gave her first post-jailhouse interview Tuesday, to ace reporter Kimora Lee Simmons.

Kim shot a pilot for her good friend's unnamed new talk show, backed by HBO.

The trimmed-down rapper seems to have shed the "Sing Sing 15." "She said she's writing books and doing a sequel to her reality special, 'Countdown to Lockdown,'" said an on-set spy.

Asked why Kim did the show, my snitch replied: "Kimora forced her. She sent a car for her."

Simmons was wearing an outfit from her new label, KLS Apparel, described as a "flowy blouson dip-dyed white-to-purple see-through dashiki with gold appliqué."

Gosh. Is that all?

"And a braided belt."

Kimora Lee Simmons Seizes on Hip-Hop's Aspirational Culture to Promote Baby Phat Line

ABC News - Kimora Lee Simmons is livin' large. Big homes. Big cars. Big bling. There are people who say Simmons is over the top. To them, Simmons says proudly, "I am."

Simmons' Baby Phat fashion line has exploded ever since she took the reins from her now estranged husband, Russell Simmons, who turned hip-hop into a household name and made a fortune doing it.

She's a very flashy mogul -- whose first tip for having it all is to think big, really big. She's got an inventory of designer shoes that would make Imelda Marcos jealous. And Simmons is happy to celebrate her success with excess. "Is it too much hair? Is it too much lip gloss? Is it too much diamonds? It can never be too much," she said.

But behind the rich-girl trappings is a shrewd businesswoman who uses her over-the-top life to promote her Baby Phat brand. And its impact on hip-hop culture has been huge.

Kimora Lee's jeweler arrested this morning

TMZ.com (June 14, 1006) - Jacob Arabo, known worldwide as Jacob the Jeweler, was arrested Thursday morning on charges stemming from a federal indictment of 16 people in Detroit.

The May 10 indictment, from the U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Michigan and unsealed today, alleges 16 defendants violated federal drug laws and laundered in excess of $270 million.

The documents allege the defendants maintained a drug operation under the name the "Black Mafia Family" and allegedly transported and distributed thousands of kilos of cocaine across state lines. The 41 year-old Arabo, whose name is spelled several different ways in the papers, was named in the Detroit indictment. The indictment seeks forfeiture of more than 30 pieces of jewelry, in addition to a number of residences and cars.

Arabo, a Russian immigrant, opened his store in Manhattan's midtown diamond district in 1981, and a visit by hip-hop artist Faith Evans in the mid-1990s proved to be the catalyst for his career as jeweler to a galaxy of rappers and actors. Evans introduced Arabo's gold- and diamond-heavy creations to her husband, the late Notorious B.I.G., and thereafter Jacob the Jeweler quickly became not just a baublemaker but an icon and a symbol of attainment in the fiercely brand-obsessed hip-hop universe.  His name appeared in hip-hop lyrics and even in a Def Jam video game.

In 2004, Arabo announced a partnership with Kanye West to produce a line of religious-themed jewelry, and that same year,  Cartier filed suit against Arabo, claiming that he had modified their products illegally.  The May 2006 cover of Vogue magazine featured actress Keira Knightley wearing a pair of Arabo's diamond earrings.
